CWD has been detected in free-ranging cervids in 36 states and four provinces and in captive cervid facilities in 22 states and three provinces. The WVDNR has implemented restrictions on baiting and feeding deer and on transporting high-risk carcass parts out of the CWD containment area to reduce. CWD was first detected in West Virginia in 2005, Virginia in 2009, Maryland in 2010, and Pennsylvania in 2012.
